It is with deep sadness that we learned of the tragic murder of Joseph Willard Vancol, director of the Ti-Boukan FM community radio station and coordinator of the ITECA Haiti Training Center in Petit Boucan, Gressier, Haiti.

On Thursday, August 20, gangsters attacked the training center and its experimental farm, a project supported by Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada over the years. Two employees were on site; one was injured, and Vancol was abducted. His body was found yesterday, September 9, in the woods near the center.

We echo ITECA’s tribute to a “committed and principled activist” who, for more than 20 years, contributed to strengthening farmers’ associations and promoting popular culture in Haiti.

Vancol played a significant role in our work with ITECA, and his death represents a major loss for our program in Haiti. We honor his commitment to his community and his work in training, community communication, and local development.

We call for a full investigation into this murder and for justice to be served for Joseph Willard Vancol. In the face of the violence plaguing Haitian society, protecting those who serve their communities is more necessary than ever.

Our prayers and thoughts are with Vancol’s family, his loved ones, his colleagues at ITECA and Ti-Boukan FM, and the entire Gressier community. We stand in solidarity with them at this difficult time.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que nous avons appris l’assassinat de Joseph Willard Vancol, directeur de la radio communautaire Ti‑Boukan FM et coordonnateur du Centre de formation d’ITECA Haïti à Petit Boucan, Gressier.

Le jeudi 20 août, des hommes armés ont attaqué le centre de formation et sa ferme expérimentale, un projet soutenu depuis plusieurs années par Développement et Paix, Caritas Canada. Deux employés se trouvaient sur les lieux : l’un a été blessé et Joseph Willard Vancol a été enlevé. Son corps a été retrouvé hier, 9 septembre, dans les bois près du centre.

Nous faisons écho à l’hommage d’ITECA à un « militant engagé et intègre » qui, pendant plus de vingt ans, a contribué au renforcement des associations paysannes et à la promotion de la culture populaire en Haïti.

Vancol a joué un rôle essentiel dans notre travail avec ITECA, et sa mort constitue une perte majeure pour notre programme en Haïti. Nous honorons son engagement envers sa communauté et son travail au service de la formation, de la communication communautaire et du développement local.

Nous appelons à une enquête complète sur ce meurtre et à ce que justice soit rendue à Joseph Willard Vancol. Face à la violence qui ravage la société haïtienne, protéger celles et ceux qui servent leurs communautés est plus nécessaire que jamais.

Nos pensées et nos prières accompagnent la famille de Vancol, ses proches, ses collègues d’ITECA et de Ti-Boukan FM, ainsi que toute la communauté de Gressier. Nous leur exprimons notre solidarité en cette période douloureuse.
